When I look at this photo now, I am more impressed by the trash that was everywhere than the seemingly unconcerned pose of the couple on the grass. Recycling was still in the future, and anti-litter campaigns mainly attended to trash on the highways. As the disposable culture became more prevalent, and the population increased, so did the trash. There was no "pack-it-in... pack-it-out" ethos. Everyone just looked the other way.
