Young boy at Esalen Institute, Big Sur, CA
I photographed this young boy at Esalen Institute on a road trip up the California Coast headed to the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. I find his gaze haunting, especially when paired with his hand, as he was seemingly pinning himself into the smallest space he could find. Escalen Institute, the Home of the Human Potential Movement, was a place where everything the adults were about was the experience of expansion: consciousness, limits, perception, mind, body and soul. I have since heard numerous tales from "Hippy Kids," all grown up who sometimes longed for a more predictable, smaller, and safer nest.
